Hello everyone. Mother Nature decided to actually cooperate with the calendar, so I haven’t been spending quite as much time onl- oh, who am I joking. The weather has nothing to do with it. I’ve been home and not in a dorm room, so I’ve been spending a lot of time sleeping. So, I apologize for missing a post on Sunday. I was doing so good there for two whole weeks.

What’s good this week? I’m glad you asked:

1. MINDBLOWING: One year in 40 seconds. So basically this guy took a picture of the same exact spot every day for a full year and then put them into this movie, along with the sound recorded there over a year. Pretty cool to watch the seasons change and all.

2. USEFUL: Multicolor Search Lab Okay, let’s say that you need a picture for something but you already have your color scheme figured out. Go to this site and put in the colors and it will give you fifty pictures with those exact colors in them. Not sure exactly when you would use this, but it’s fun to play with.

3. PICTURES: A Walk Through Time. Basically what these people did was take some old photographs, and go to the places they were taken. Then, they held them up so you can see the then vs now contrast. Worth checking out.

4. USEFUL: A List of Common Misconceptions. Okay, it’s a wikipedia page, but I still deem it worth your time. Like, here’s an example: you probably were told over and over again that the Pilgrims dressed in all black with those weird belt buckle hats, right? According to this, totally wrong. Maybe not the best example, but I don’t wanna give away any of the good ones.

5. TIMEWASTER [also 21+ please.] I know I said I’d try to keep this safe for all ages.. but this site has a drinking game for more or less every movie in alphabetical order. Even if you don’t play, it’s funny the things this guy came up with..

Alright, that’s all for now.

As always, if you find it before me, let me know :)

Lincoln, Cooking in a Hotel, and The Universe.

May 1st, 2009

Hey guys. Finals week is finally over, and I’ve had a lot to procrastinate on this week. I mean, really, who needs to study or write papers when there’s new and exciting websites to explore? Oh, and nothing Swine Flu related, I’m over that.

They’re pretty much all stumbleupon this week. Here’s what’s new:

1. CREEPY: Interesting Lincoln Facts. Call me a nerd, I really don’t care, but read some of these and you’ll understand why I have a favorite president. Did you know that he predicted his own death? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

2. USEFUL: How to Cook in a Hotel Room has tips for cooking with limited tools and space, using things like coffee pots. Seriously, whoever tested these out is a genius. I don’t spend that much time in hotels, but these are definitely dorm room adaptable.

3. PICTURES: Pictures that SHOULD be Photoshopped, but aren’t is exactly what it sounds like. These are pictures that if someone showed you, you’d be all, “No way man.” But no, seriously. Not photoshopped. If you’re one of those people that changes your computer desktop a lot, you’ll want this one.

4. USEFUL: Knowem is a handy little site that checks 120 popular websites to see if the name you use is available. We all have that one name we use for everything, and this makes it easy to see what is still available to you. Claim them all before someone else does!

5. MINDBOGGLING. A brain cell is the same as the universe. Interestingly enough, the structure of each individual brain cell is identical to that of the entire universe. Inside your brain, there could be a million little universes floating around. Feeling insignificant yet?

6. TIME WASTER: Hamlet as a Facebook Feed and Homer as Twitter updates go more or less hand in hand, but both are entertaining. Yeah, I’m an English major, so I guess it’s a bit more entertaining to me, but seriously. Classic literature + social networking = a good time.

7. USEFUL: THE BEST online converter tool that I’ve ever found. Put in one unit and it converts it into every other unit possible. Everything from distance to Morse Code is represented, and you can convert from inches to lightyears in one click.

8. CREEPY/MINDBLOWING: Please don’t try this at home but this guy totally figured out how to steal someone’s identity with only a very basic knowledge of the person. I’m posting this more as a cautionary tale then as a help guide. If you DO steal an identity, please don’t get traced back to me =/

9. TIME WASTER: Miss old Nick? I know you do. This site has full listing of Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold and plenty of others. Pretty decent quality and listed by seasons. Your inner child will love you.

10. USELESS: Unnecessary Knowledge gives a new pointless, yet fascinating factoid every time you refresh. The repeat after a while, but there’s a LOT of them.

11. TIME WASTER: Texts From Last Night is inappropriate for young audiences, but will definitely make you feel better about your night out. Fun stories about painfully humiliating experiences, very similar to FMyLife.

12. INFORMATIVE: Images That Change the World is a list of images that catch the best and worst of humanity. Each of them is breathtaking in their own way, and many have heartbreaking stories to go with them. Not for the squeemish.

It’s weird to end on a random number, but I’m feeling twelve tonight. As always, if you catch it before me, pass it on :)

Jenn’s Blog

April 27th, 2009

Here’s the deal. It took me almost a month to decide what I was going to make my Quad Blog about, mostly because I’m incredibly indecisive. Then, I realized that there is one thing that I can always commit to, when there’s nothing else I want to do, and that’s the INTERNET. Well, it’s technology in general, but it’s largely the web. I’m one of those who has blogs and feeds and all kinds of daily update sites that gets checked regularly. One that says things like ftw. And most importantly, one that knows the beauty that is Stumbleupon.

So, this is what’s going to happen. This is now going to be the official home of Jenn’s Internet Blog, where I’ll share with you all of the fun things I’ve found, been shown and stumbled-upon. Because it’s from me, I can’t say it will be updated weekly. There will be weeks with 3-5 posts, and I might skip a week here or there, but I assure you it will always be fun. I’ll try to keep the offensive posting to a minimum, and always with fair warning. Oh, and just as a disclaimer, I don’t claim to own or operate any of these sites. They purely exist because for my amusement because someone else thought they should.

What’s up this week?

1. VIDEO: Passed to me by a friend: The Bible in a Minute. Here you can see two guys reminiscent of Joe Young in Orgazmo retelling the Bible in 60 seconds. Somewhat accurate, definitely a good laugh.

2. PICTURES: via Stumbleupon: Transparent Computer Screens. An interesting camera trick, illusion of the computer screen being see-through. Some are kind of mindblowing and probably required intense setup and very quick photography.

3. USEFUL: via Stumbleupon: Table of Condiments. Hey, we’re college kids. Keep this handy, it’s the Table of Condiments and When They Go Bad. Did you know the shelf life of a pickle is 6 months? You do now.

4. FUNNY: via my favorites menu: Greg Rutter’s Definitive List of The 99 Things You Should Have Already Experienced On The Internet Unless You’re a Loser or Old or Something. Bookmark this one for those weeks I don’t have anything new to share. A huge collection of all those viral videos, ridiculous links and funny pictures that you probably have definitely heard about, if you haven’t already seen. No promises that I won’t post something from this list at some point, it’s an extensive list that I won’t be cross checking with, but definitely worth saving for future reference. I mean, come on. Finals Week. You’ll need distraction some how.

5. TIME WASTER: via the favorites menu: Guess The Google. A FANTASTIC time waster, again, just in time for Finals Week. Guess The Google displays 20 thumbnail images and then gives you twenty seconds to guess the Google search that generated the images. Some are easy, some are kind of surprising, but it’s a fun way to waste away an evening in twenty second increments.

That’s it for now. Oh, and please, if you find something before me, feel free to share :D
